You are so right. Last time I heard my friend tell me how he was affected by what was happening to “Angry Joe”, I kept telling him “You don’t even know him, wtf are you doing!”…
Consuming content is a thing, but I ain’t making friends over watching a video… -_-
When you’ve commented a youtuber dying with “There went a years worth of paychecks” it got me thinking: what are the people on the other side of the screen to some. While some surely make a personal one-way connection, to some content creators can be just what you commented π
Why do I care about content creators I watch (those I pay for at least), why do I care about wathing you? Do I have a connection or are you just an investment of mine (however small π ).
You’ve mentioned in the past videos about people watching you exhibiting personal attachment, what is it really though? Are they connecting or just happy about their investment paying off?
Since everyone here is paying, payment, money always yields some kind of commitment in some extent, and you do go DEEP and personal sometimes. So since the initial commitment doors opened with the payment, the feels have an open door (however small) of flooding in. Especially since some of us have watched you for years.
Over those years, you’ve shared so much on youtube, and here, your life, however general it was, your personality, the style you teach and work in. This is a lot of information to build an emotional profile from I would think.
I mostly have to take a step back myself whenever I hear people I have listened to for years going through good or bad, and literally have seen them evolve, change, and grow before my eyes. At the end of the day can you really say you don’t know the person on the other side after so much input from them?
I like your content Eli, but we may or may not hit it off in the real world. I have been told that I am very likable of a person.
To be honest, you most certainly will probably never find me in the Baltimore area. That city is a no bueno in my book. DC or Philadelphia on the other hand is an entirely different ballpark.
And think of the reverse. Those who say stupid things online, and if someone ends up jumping off a cliff because of that.

Just a fun side of life to think about I suppose.

Just something to thinking about, out loud. π
