I love the points you raised about the cost of maintaining near-obsolete technology. People get so excited about all they have available they forget the cost of maintaining those systems and everything else that comes along with it.
Another thing I can see people overlooking are the new architecture vulnerabilities that are beginning to surface. Considering Intel was only going back to generation 5 and up for offering some sort of patch for Meltdown and Spectre, does he really want to inherit a bunch of servers and hardware that are unpatchable to this new classification of emerging vulnerability threats?

For me, I like the direction the business is headed towards but for others who have been with the organization for about five years or longer… not so much.
