One of the greatest values I see in a platform like YouTube is that ability to humanize people and allow different folks to be able to explain the world as they see it. Unfortunately “freedom of speech” in conversations many times is used to silence the other side. When people debate or argue there is a motive to “win” vs actually listening to what the other person has to say. With YouTube people are able to put out their ideas in complete form and then you can decide what you think about their ideas and ways of looking at existence.
I have no idea how I stumbled upon “Mike the Cop”, but he has an excellent channel where he talks about his viewpoints about police situations from the perspective of a police officer. Agree with him or not what’s valuable is the 5-20 minute videos explaining the world view of himself and officers like him. A huge issue right now is that Police are not seen as people, rather as avatars for the government. When you have armed individuals who have the job to go into dangerous situations it’s wise to realize that they are human beings, with real fear, and real foibles. Add in the fact that they have the legal right to kill people, and I would argue it’s a good thing to know where they are coming from.
Mike the Cop’s YouTube channel is the standard talking head in front of camera. It’s very good audio and video quality, and he knows how to make his points. He is a white, male police officer I think from Michigan who doesn’t overly mince his words. This may definitely rub some people the wrong way, but I think by listening to some of his videos it will give you a better idea of where he, and fellow cops are coming from.
At the end of the day arguing with police, or any government employee, isn’t going to get anyone very far. By having videos like this it allows you to realize where there may be fixable issues in the system and then go and try to deal with the issue through politicians and those that make the larger decisions. Sometimes you also realize that bad situations can have no “good” solutions.
